Fixing the "Configuring Expression Web" bug in Outlook 2003

After installing the latest trial version of Expression Web, every time Outlook 2003 is opened a dialogue box pops up saying “[b:3mfimddw]Please wait Windows Installer is configuring Expression Web[/b:3mfimddw]” or something to that effect. It would run through the configuration setup and ask to restart Windows. Even after restarting Windows the dialogue box would reappear.

[b:3mfimddw]The solution[/b:3mfimddw]

The solution (for us) was quite simple. In Outlook 2003, select [b:3mfimddw]Help > Detect and Repair [/b:3mfimddw]from the main menu. You will need to insert your installation disc for Microsoft Office. Immediately after running Detect and Repair, the problem seems to have gone away.

Manage a hosted DNN database on your local computer

I have my DNN site hosted on my GoDaddy web hosting plan. From time to time, I use their SQL utility to backup my database. This creates a .BAK file in the [b:cl7uop7r]_db_backups [/b:cl7uop7r]folder. I discovered that I can download and access this file on my local computer using [b:cl7uop7r]MS SQL Server Management Studio Express [/b:cl7uop7r](free tool). You’ll also need to install [b:cl7uop7r]MS SQL Server 2005 [/b:cl7uop7r](also free). Don’t worry- these tools can be installed on a workstation like Windows XP.

After looking around for similar detailed instructions, I really did not see anything out there that really explained how to setup a IIS box for DotNetNuke, optimized and ready for production. Assuming the development environment you are currently working on is using just localhost, adding a subdomain for dev.domain.com may not be neccessary, but provides an easy way
to work with multiple domains and projects. Point DNS for dev subdomain to the IP address of your development box and point the prod subdomain to your production box IP. Leave, http://www.domain.com pointing to where ever you have it pointing currently, but turn your TTLs down to 5 seconds. If this is a new website, you may already be pointing http://www.domain.com

Refresh database view if necessary and ensure the database is accessible. If you want to create a custom SQL Server login on production for security reasons, now is the time to do it.
